Recently the term "Urban Forestry" (translated by HKSAR as 城市林務) is becoming hot within the government and its message to the citizens of Hong Kong. It is a good trend for management of urban tree (with the boarder landscape), which is advocated by FAO of UN as well. Let's check out the definition and the spirit of Urban Forestry - defined as early in 1974 by Erik Joegensen as "… a specialized branch of forestry and has as its objectives the cultivation and management of trees for their present and potential contribution to the physiological, sociological and economic well-being of urban society. These contributions include the over-all ameliorating effect of trees on their environment, as well as their recreational and general amenity value."
Understanding the spirit is important or we may go to a wrong direction.
